About NYPSC

The objective of the New York Product Stewardship Council is the adoption of the Product Stewardship  approach to manage the state’s solid waste.

Mission

The Mission of the New York Product Stewardship Council (Council) is to promote product stewardship as the priority policy for solid waste management. Product stewardship policies shift waste management off taxpayers in order to reduce public costs. Such policies can also promote improvements in product and packaging design creating environmental sustainability.

Product Stewardship and Extended Producer Responsibility laws and policies create many benefits:

  • Reducing waste destined for landfills and waste to energy facilities
  • Improved product design for recycling and materials recovery
  • Economic development in new industries and  jobs within New York State

The Council was created under the auspices of the New York State Association for Solid Waste Management. NYPSC is constituted primarily of representatives of local government agencies, together with representatives of other stakeholder groups that support the product stewardship approach, including state solid waste officials, businesses, recyclers and the environmental community. It is currently guided by our sixteen-member Board of Directors. This unique partnership is working to integrate the principles of product stewardship into the policy and economic structures of New York State.
