New York’s e-waste law successfully shifted responsibility for electronics recycling to manufacturers and phased in disposal bans of electronics in the trash.   After more than a decade of operation, stakeholders widely recognized and petitioned for program modernization to stabilize funding and improve access.   Amendments intended to strengthen the existing program were launched in 2020 which expanded education and outreach requirements, clarified expectations for drop-off locations and events, and reinforced the financial responsibility of manufacturers.
